Glutamine supplementation for treating Irritable Bowel Syndrome – a placebo-controlled randomized study

Zhou Q, Verne ML, Fields JZ, Lefante JJ, Basra S, Salameh H, Verne GN, Randomised placebo-controlled trial of dietary glutamine supplements for postinfectious irritable bowel syndrome, Gut. 2018 Aug 14. pii: gutjnl-2017-315136. doi: 10.1136/gutjnl-2017-315136.

A  randomized  double-blinded, placebo-controlled  study  held  during  8  weeks, had  tested  a  treatment  of  consuming  glutamine  supplementation  among  patients  of  IBS  and  leaky  gut  after  an  infection.

The  subjects  were  randomly  divided: 4-5  subjects  have  received  5  gr  of  glutamine  comparing  to  52  subjects  whom  have  received  placebo.

The  results  of  the  study  have  shown  that  in  IBS (irritable  bowel  syndrome) with  an  increased  intestinal  permeability (leaky  gut) after  an  infection, glutamine  supplementation  does  dramatically  and  safely  decrease  IBS  symptoms.
